Leroy Whelan - Artist

My name is Leroy, and I’m a proud Aboriginal artist with roots in the Warrgamay, Biyaygirri, and Girramay tribes from the lush rainforest country of Ingham / Cardwell / Hinchinbrook Island, North Queensland. Art has been a part of my life for as long as I can remember—it's something that was passed down to me from my mum and uncles, and it continues to grow with me every day.

I’m now based in Townsville, which I’ve called home for approx. the past 20 years. It's here that I've built a beautiful family and a life deeply connected to both country and community. My style is a blend of traditional Aboriginal storytelling and modern contemporary art, inspired by our ancestors, the land, and the vibrant spirit of my people.

Family means everything to me. Whether I’m painting, sitting by the fire, or enjoying something simple like a bit of chocolate, it’s all about sharing moments, honouring culture, and staying grounded in who I am.

Through my art, I hope to share our stories, keep our traditions alive, and offer something meaningful to the world.
